Rohit Sharma has been a constant presence for India at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, playing in all seven editions of the tournament so far. The present Indian captain also helped the team lift the title in the inaugural edition in 2007.
In 2007, Rohit Sharma scored 88 runs in three innings, including a gritty maiden T20I fifty against South Africa in the Super 8s.
The next edition, in 2009, proved to be a more productive T20 World Cup for the Mumbai-based batter on the personal front as he scored 131 runs in five matches at an average of 32.75. Rohit’s unbeaten knock of 52 runs against Ireland in bowler-friendly conditions at Trent Bridge helped India win the group stage.
Rohit Sharma’s stock in the Indian T20I team kept rising after 2009. However, in the 2010 edition, Rohit only played three games, raking up 84 runs. The Hitman’s highest score in the tournament was a 79-run knock off 46 balls, albeit in a losing cause against Australia in the group stage.
Despite a difficult 2012 T20 World Cup campaign, Rohit Sharma displayed his attacking prowess against England in the group stage. He came in at number four to take charge of the innings and scored 55 runs off 33 balls to help India put up a sizable score and win the game. Overall, Rohit scored 82 runs in four innings in the edition.
The Indian cricket team made it to the final of the T20 World Cup 2014 and Rohit Sharma was one of the reasons behind the team’s success. Opening the batting, Rohit smashed 200 runs in six matches. He relished his new role in the format and his highlights in the tournament included a match-winning 62-run knock against the West Indies.
The 2016 edition was a bit of a setback for the Hitman as he managed only 88 runs in five matches, averaging a disappointing 17.60. India were knocked out in the semi-final against the West Indies at Rohit’s home ground, the Wankhede Stadium.
While the T20 World Cup 2021 was an underwhelming campaign for India, Rohit Sharma found success with the bat. The Indian vice-captain for the tournament scored 174 runs in five matches while striking at 151.50. Rohit put up a memorable batting display against Afghanistan, amassing 74 runs from 47 balls to help India take their first victory in the tournament.
