New Zealand all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme has been ruled out of the ongoing Test series against England due to a tear in his right heel. Michael Bracewell who was earlier named in the squad as a cover for Henry Nicholls has been added to the New Zealand Test squad as his replacement. 

de Grandhomme pulled out of his run-up while bowling his fourth over on the third day of the first Test match at Lord’s. He immediately left the field. Scans later revealed a tear to his right plantar fascia, the ligament connecting the heel bone to the toes. 

The all-rounder was the lone shining spark in the first innings for New Zealand, scoring an unbeaten 42. With the ball, the 35-year-old bowled eight overs for 24 runs and picked up the key wicket of Joe Root for 11. 

The heel injury is set to rule out Colin de Grandhomme for up to 10 to 12 weeks. He will miss New Zealand’s upcoming white-ball tours of Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands. 

“It’s a real shame for Colin to suffer this injury so early in the series,” Gary Stead, New Zealand’s coach, said.

“He’s a massive part of our Test side and we’ll certainly miss him. It’s great to be able to call on someone like Michael who’s been with the squad for the past month and is match ready.” 

Michael Bracewell, who earned his maiden New Zealand contract in May last month is the nephew of former New Zealand internationals John Bracewell and Brendon Bracewell. The 31-year-old has represented New Zealand in three ODIs so far. 

1-0 down in the Test series, New Zealand will travel to Nottingham to play England in the second Test match starting on Friday.
